I love these two photographs. I don't quite know why I put them here on my landing page, But maybe I will do something with them eventually. They must have been taken around 1940. The littlest girl in the picture is my mother. The two older women are her mother and her aunt. I think the others are cousins. One person is missing from each of the photos, taking turns with the camera most likely. Something is happening out of frame that they are reacting to differently - amusement, surprise, worry, disgust, confusion appear on different faces. I love the shadow of the photographer at the bottom of each photo, the yellowed tape on the edges, my mother shading her eyes and squinting into the sun, the row of legs and shoes, the feeling of immediacy. I wish I could ask one of them what the occasion was and what they were seeing, but they are all gone now.

This is a trailer for a project that ended up going in a different direction.
